The Upper Skeena River, British Columbia, Canada
The Upper Skeena River in British Columbia is one of the best-known wild steelhead regions in the world. Its major tributaries, including the Babine, Bulkley, and Kispiox, have long been associated with large, powerful summer-run steelhead and traditional fly-fishing methods.
The fish are the main draw. Upper Skeena wild steelhead commonly run in the 8- to 20-pound range, with much larger fish possible. These are inland-migrating fish that have traveled a long way from the ocean, and their size, condition, and willingness to move to a fly have helped make the Skeena system famous.
The main season generally runs from mid-July through October, with some fall fishing extending into early November depending on the river, regulations, and conditions. Early autumn is especially valued by fly anglers because fish may still respond to floating lines, waking flies, and dry flies. As water temperatures drop, anglers often shift toward sink-tips and deeper presentations.
